Right as we were wrapping up recording for the day one of Jake's and Dene's new neighbors, a scrub jay, showed up. And it had some very specific requests.

. Topher:

Hey, to over here with a quick clippings, extra.

. Topher:

This didn't really fit in the last episode, but I'm such a

. Topher:

sucker for stuff like this.

. Topher:

So I'm really excited to share it with you.

. Topher:

So when I was recording with Jake DNE, they were telling me about this

. Topher:

scrub Jay, which is a bird that's related to blue Jays and crows.

. Topher:

Apparently they're very smart.

. Topher:

And Jake had been feeding it peanuts to get it kind of more used to them.

. Topher:

Uh, it showed up right at the end of when we were record.

. Topher:

It was really loud.

. Topher:

You'll hear it.

. Topher:

Um, and so he decided to see if we could coax it to snatch a peanut

. Topher:

from our hands while we recorded it.

. Topher:

Okay.

. Topher:

So what's going on now?

. Topher:

What do we hear?

. Topher:

Okay, so you were just about to leave and our scrub Jay friend showed

. Topher:

up and he, or she haven't figured out how to sex them quite yet.

. Topher:

Uh, is squawking its face off saying, I want peanuts.

. Topher:

I want peanuts, even though it's not eating them right now, all the

. Topher:

are takes these peanuts and then goes and hides them somewhere else.

. Topher:

Uh, they can cash 'em and remember up to something like 200 locations

. Topher:

of where they cash these peanuts.

. Topher:

So, uh, They, they seem on impatient.

. Topher:

So let's see if we can, we're gonna try and get one here.

. Topher:

It coming landing in Jake's hand.

. Topher:

Yeah, you're right.

. Topher:

Come on microphone.

. Topher:

Look a little weird.

. Topher:

Ooh, just up the ante with an additional peanut two.

. Topher:

And I keep interpreting this squawk is like, oh, I'm kind of annoyed.

. Topher:

Yeah.

. Topher:

Maybe I'll move the microphone back a little bit.

. Topher:

Let's just like here.

. Topher:

Okay.

. Topher:

Did it even get one and knocked one?

. Topher:

It did.

. Topher:

It got one.

. Topher:

Let's try it again.

. Topher:

yeah.

. Topher:

You let's see if it'll oh, it's gonna go cash first.

. Topher:

It's gotta go hide at first.

. Topher:

So watch, this is fun too.

. Topher:

Looking for the perfect spot.

. Topher:

Yep.

. Topher:

For the rat.

. Topher:

I'm sure the rat will find it though.

. Topher:

That's why you gotta hide a lot of em.

. Topher:

Yeah.

. Topher:

And then I love this.

. Topher:

He covers it up.

. Topher:

Yeah.

. Topher:

Picks up the leaves.

. Topher:

So he sticks the peanut into the, under some leaves and then

. Topher:

he carries the leaves on top of.

. Topher:

okay.

. Topher:

He's a very tidy little bird and then he kinda walks away Uhhuh.

. Topher:

like, you didn't see anything.

. Topher:

Exactly.

. Topher:

I've got another one.

. Topher:

Here you go.

. Topher:

Come get it

. Topher:

right here.

. Topher:

It's so cool.

. Topher:

It's fun.

. Topher:

Cuz he just like, he comes right at you.

. Topher:

Yes.

. Topher:

And you're like, is he gonna stop raising you?

. Topher:

How to go for my eyes?

. Topher:

crazy.

. Topher:

Amounts of control.

. Topher:

Yeah.

. Topher:

And then he just bounces so delicately right off your hand.

. Topher:

Yeah.

. Topher:

He don't even feel his beak.

. Topher:

Yeah.

. Topher:

He just gets the nut.

. Topher:

Yeah.

. Topher:

Such good aim.

. Topher:

That's and I think that's why they like the UNS shelled peanuts, because

. Topher:

they can get grip around them.

. Topher:

Oh yeah.

. Topher:

Yeah.

. Topher:

If you gave it just.

. Topher:

right.

. Topher:

He choking hazard ready for more?

. Topher:

I mean, he'll do this all day.

. Topher:

I'm sure.

. Topher:

Probably literal.

. Topher:

It's a pretty little thing too.

. Topher:

Yeah.

. Topher:

Like the little right little dip.

. Topher:

You got a dinosaur Bob to him.

. Topher:

Mm-hmm philosopher after type situation and it's cute

. Topher:

cuz it is getting used to us.

. Topher:

So like it won't, I mean, it's not gonna hop on my finger, but

. Topher:

it's also like, well, what do you have something for me or not?

. Topher:

. Yeah.

. Topher:

And I've tried to just feed it directly I'm trying to figure out what can,

. Topher:

what helps to get it like used to my presence and feeling comfortable.

. Topher:

So it doesn't need to run away immediately.

. Topher:

But I think the caching instinct, as soon as it's got the peanut.

. Topher:

Yeah, it's outta here.

. Topher:

Well, it can't.

. Topher:

Yeah.

. Topher:

It's like, it's gotta do something with it.

. Topher:

It can't put it in his pocket.

. Topher:

. Topher: If you wanna see a video in

. Topher:

a peanut from Jake's outstretched Palm, it's gonna be on our Instagram.

. Topher:

That's at fresh clippings.

. Topher:

Thanks for joining us for this clippings extra.

About the Podcast

Clippings
Non-expert Gardening
"For anyone who wants a little taste of sunshine."

Clippings is a gardening show that's more about plant enthusiasm than plant expertise. Host Topher Burns just moved from an apartment in Brooklyn to a house in Portland - finally some dirt to play with, and he has got *projects* planned. Things don't always go right. Warning: some plants might die. Fortunately his mom's green-thumb advice is just a phone call away.

For master gardeners and marigold-novices alike, each episode is a quick, delightful moment spent outside. Imagine leaning over your fence and asking your neighbor what he's doing in his yard today. You might get some helpful gardening tips, you might just enjoy the sound of the birds. Either way, you're going to be glad you took a moment to stop and smell the gardenias.
